Why I'm Done with One-Sided News: a Lie is still a Lie

By Benjamin H. Liles

Justice is such an interesting word. On one hand it implies a legal term in which two sides come to mediate a sentence due for the person who has done wrong. But is there another meaning for this often misunderstood word? In 1828 Noah Webster provided tons of terms that we get our modern dictionaries and thesaurus's from. The word I'm looking at is the one for justice. It says of this word, "The virtue which consists in giving to every one what is his due; practical conformity to the laws and to principles of rectitude in the dealings of men with each other; honesty; Impartiality; equal distribution of right in expressing opinions; fair representation of facts respecting merit or demerit."

However, lately I've been noticing a trend. It's one in which news outlets, the popular ones, decide the news that everyone gets. It's not only done here in America but also around the world. Outlets such as BBC, Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS and even NBC all partake in. It's a bit like what history and science teachers are doing within the school system. "Let's give a flawed, semi-honest version of what's happened and how things work," kind of mentality.

Don't get me wrong here; I'm no news reporter in the least bit. While yes, I do have some of those traits ingrained within me as I am a writer, I've not been properly trained to be a serious journalist. However, I do seek after truth and justice. As the Bible being God's word says, "He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8).

I know I have used that verse a great deal but it is worth repeating. If we're going to be honest, true and real we need to be adequately fair towards each other. Here's the thing of it: we ought to delight in the truth. For Paul wrote to the church, "Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another" (Ephesians 4:25).

That's the big deal here. God, in His merciful kindness, from the beginning even until up to now has been completely straight and truthful with us about the condition we are in as people. We all have this ingrained problem within us. Scripture alone, which teaches and imparts, says, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

I want to make this as simple as possible for you, the reader: the truth is what shows and tells us what's wrong with us, what we need to do to be made right, to put off evil and wrong-doing, to love God above all else, and to love others as we love ourselves. But then again we are self-loathing people. If we are so into ourselves, so selfish and unyielding, dishonest and overall immoral, what makes us think we can ever attain the standard of living God calls us to?

If we lay aside our vanity, our selfishness, for possibly perhaps ten minutes of our time and just got brutally honest we'd see we're sinful, selfish, proud, arrogant and think we have no need for life with the God of this universe. Yet, He's withholding His wrath on mankind? Now i know there are tons of people who claim that God is a tyrant, that He's far off and could care less about the whiles and lives of all mankind. But if that were true why then did He send His Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for your sins? (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23; Matthew 27:45-52; Mark 15:33-38; Luke 23:44-46; John 19:31; Galatians 3:13; )

But yet there are those, even within the confines of the Christian church, who do the same thing as our media and those who teach do. They put down the truth saying and claiming it's not absolute, that it has no place for any of us. These people are so misinformed, so badly mistaken about what truth is they refuse to acknowledge it in any way shape or form, and it's why Paul, at the beginning of Romans says, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness...because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened" (Romans 1:18-21).

The real reason for God being far off from such people is because these prefer to be without God. these alone are ones who say things such as, "God cannot be known" or even "There is no God," but they teach an alternate gospel, an alternate version of things which aren't even of God. Their condemnation is deserved by their own hands. Scripture says of them, "There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers" (Proverbs 6:16-19).

But it takes all people, all kinds. There are those who sit on the sidelines doing nothing, but they witness these things and simply remain quiet. They take a part in this as well for not speaking up or even out about such atrocities being done. Meanwhile there are those such as myself who point to a better way, the way of Jesus, the way of the cross -- the truth!

And the truth is that God sent His Son, His only begotten Son, to shed His humanity on the cross so that we may be made right in and with Him; for as scripture declares, "Come now, let us reason together; Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool. I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like a mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you. Let the wicked man forsake his own way and the unrighteous man his own thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion, and to our God, for He will freely pardon" (Isaiah 1:18; 44:22; 55:7).

We have this through the Son, Jesus Christ, for those who believe unto Him by faith, salvation is possible. He is the Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel who has loved us from the beginning, the One who called to Abraham telling him to sacrifice his son, for God would end up doing this thing Himself: providing a substitute in our place so we no longer have to keep making sacrifices to Him. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but I'd much rather have the whole truth than partial truth, for even partial truth is still a lie. And a lie is just as wrong and evil as having sinned to begin with. I pray and hope this shows you that God on high rather bless you and keep you within Him. In christ's name I pray. Amen.
