By Benjamin H. Liles
Around the time I met my wife, Tanya, she had always told me that praying God's promises -- by scripture verse was not simply a good idea, but also activated God's presence in your life. I know that's way before this book was published by Revell, but there's a lot of truth to praying God's promises so it comes as no surprise Linda Evans Shepherd wrote this book just for that reason: to help those of us, like myself to focus better on the person of God and who He is. She says this and I've heard it said myself, "It's all about who you know."
At the same time, it's all about who knows you, too. How can God be present in your life if you don't first see your need for Him? We're told in His word, "Then the eyes of the blind will be opened
and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer and the mute tongue will shout for joy. For waters will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. The parched ground will become a pool, the thirsty land springs of water" (Isaiah 35:5-7a, Berean Study).
This was fulfilled when Jesus said the same thing in answer to his cousin, John the Baptist, if He was the one sent from God: "The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor" (Matthew 11:5, New Living Translation). In this day and age we have the gift of God's Spirit for it was promised to Isaiah by God Himself, "For waters will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. The parched ground will become a pool, the thirsty land springs of water." It's a promise made for those who are tired and are restless under the hard pressures of life, looking for a God who heals.
He does! And so much more as well. His greatest desire for you isn't to simply know His word, securing fast to His promises. No, He wants you to know Him, to make Him your Strong Tower, a Shield, and even a Rampart where He can keep watch over you in all things. So, while we can and should pray His promises as Linda suggests we ought to do, we can stand on the promises in His word that He will do what He says He will do.
I received a complimentary copy from Revell in good faith so as to give an accurate and unbiased opinion of this book.
