Honoring Wives

By Benjamin H. Liles

In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself - Ephesians 5:28

While I don't always feel I exhibit this well towards my wife, it should be noted I do my best daily to strengthen her and lift her up. Let me see if I can rephrase this even better; when Paul says this to the Church we can say that Christ loved us so much He gave His life for us (He is the husband, we - as His Church - are His wife). He loved us so much He paid for our sins in the most loving and profound way, by giving of Himself sacrificially, making us clean, pure and separate for His love and glory.

Likewise, as a husband myself, I often find myself asking this question: what am I doing to honor her? What am I doing to show I love my wife? By doing those things that make her feel loved, pure, clean and without stain I've done my job. Even if it means, during a fight, I need to give up so she can feel secure then I need to do so. It's not a matter of winning or losing, but who you serve and improving how we do so. It means showing the honor and respect she deserves. Who by their own life can save it by keeping it? When my wife is sick and she can't do much, even though I hate doing certain things, I do what she asks of me as I love her with all my heart. It makes that difference when we lay our lives down in a sacrificial manner. After all it is said, "Greater love has no one than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13, Berean Literal).

I love my wife, and by loving her I am also showing love to myself as well. God may come first in my life, but my wife is always the next to get my love. My parents and friends come after her these days, but it doesn't mean my love is any less to anyone else, it's just different.

Father, help me today in showing my wife I love, uphold, and honor her. Show me the way to go in doing this. If it means guarding my lips, then I need to do so. If it means being her hands, then help me in this. I know You will as You do this through her for me when I truly need it. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
