A Chosen Race

By Benjamin H. Liles

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; ~ 1 Peter 2:9

When we come to Christ, after being blood bought, we are exactly as Peter says: “A chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,” and “A people for God’s own possession.”

We are chosen because of our faith in what He accomplished. We are a royal priesthood, having but one Priest – Jesus Christ – who intercedes on our behalf with the Father, God. We are a holy nation, but that means we need to forsake and put off sin. We are a people for God’s own possession by allowing Him and His word to richly dwell within us. I know where I stand in all of this, but I pray daily that everyone else would see themselves as God sees all of us: in need of Him and seeking for Him to be for us.

And that’s a very big thing. If you recall from a couple of days ago Peter says, “Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). The Devil wants to keep what and who belongs to him. It means that those who aren’t a part of God’s kingdom will be –

1) Without God.
2) Thinking themselves to be wise
3) Believing they are right (and even righteous)
4) Having a form of godliness, but lacking it
5) Liars
6) Idolaters
7) Adulterers, etc.

I’m not saying all of this to discourage anyone from thinking or believing they aren’t God’s. I’d rather make sure everyone knows where we all stand without Him who saves from sin and death. If you’re under sin, death reigns over you. Yes, death is over all, in the short run. However, the one who has the Lord on their side has overcome as He overcame sin and death on our behalf. That’s why Peter encourages us to be able to “proclaim the excellencies of Him who called” us “Out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

I don’t know of anyone who would want to remain in the dark, knowing someday their secrets to be laid bare. That will also happen in the Christian’s life, but it will be done for those who have a reward with God. And that last statement is another small lesson in and of itself. Be blessed, be encouraged, and be of good cheer. Our God who saved us also is for us at all times. God bless!
